Organizing our time for quality family time
Dear Parents / Guardians,
Being a parent nowadays is a challenging task. We all need to work many hours to sustain the costly lifestyle, and this leads to fewer family moments as everyone’s own timings seem to be working mostly against our family programme. Although the schedule is demanding, we have to change the way we think and make sure our priorities stay in order - finding time to be with our beloved children doesn’t have to be so difficult.
As we organize our daily programme and our children arrange their own, we need to also organize a programme that includes joyful activities with our children. We don’t need to spend too much time because children need their time alone as well. We only need to find ways to show our presence, to communicate effectively with them, to show them our love, support and encouragement.
I wish you all to have more quality time, and the festive season is the best opportunity to enjoy with your beloved ones,

Connecting our children with the knowledge of the past
Dear Parents / Guardians,
During the month of November, we celebrated the National Day of UAE at Second Home Nursery School.
We aimed through this celebration to connect our children hearts with the knowledge of the past. They need through our guidance to know, evaluate and appreciate the history and cultural heritage so they can easily follow the instructions of the past and the unique achievements of those visionairs who set the pillars for the new nation. Following their glorious steps our children can be the creators of a promising tomorrow.
My wish for all of you is to have more strength, more wisdom, more clarified vision to pursue an even better future for your families through the significance of the past because the past defines us. It’s the field upon which we build the promising future.
As late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan said: “He who doesn’t know his past cannot make the best of his present and future, for it is from the past that we learn”

What Makes a Great Teacher - The Example of Annie Sullivan
By Mrs Xenia Giannaki, Headmistress at Second Home Nursery School
Being a teacher is a matter of trust, belief and endless love. Trusting in yourself and believing you have all that you need to touch another heart is the first step on the staircase of knowledge. So what makes a great teacher?
It involves the warm feeling of connection and being part of something valuable for both… It’s about believing in the potential of students and seeing the result they can bring even before you take their hand… It’s about loving them as they are, just like a new present that comes to you, as you unfold their valuable individuality and uniqueness to the world...
When a real teacher appears in your life path, you will definitely know it in your heart. One of the educators stories that really affected my life and left its impressions in my own heart is the story of teacher Annie Sullivan, who mentored the famous Hellen Keller. Anne Sullivan was a skilled, dedicated teacher. Because of Anne Sullivan's patience, persistence, and high expectations, Helen Keller learned to speak, read, write -- and sing!
Explore Annie’s personality and her loving affection to Hellen Keller throughout her life in this first story from our monthly focus on exceptional and inspirational educators.
The following excerpt about her role in Helen Keller's life is taken from the Encyclopedia of World Biography at http://www.notablebiographies.com/Jo-Ki/Keller-Helen.html.
...
"The most significant day I remember in all my life is the one on which my teacher, Anne Mansfield Sullivan, came to me. I am filled with wonder when I consider the immeasurable contrast between the two lives which it connects." - The Story of My Life
After an illness when she was nineteen months old, Helen was left deaf and blind. She could not speak and developed severe behavior problems.
Helen's mother began to search for help. She contacted Alexander Graham Bell who was working with deaf children. Mr. Bell referred Mrs. Keller to the Perkins School for the Blind in Massachusetts.
The school sent Annie Sullivan, a teacher and former student (who was also visually impaired) to work with Helen.
Anne Sullivan was a skilled, dedicated teacher. Because of Anne Sullivan's patience, persistence, and high expectations, Helen learned to speak, read, write -- and sing!
Helen became an excellent student. After years of studying with Anne, Helen attended the Perkins School. In addition to learning to read English, she learned to read French, German, Greek, Latin and Braille.
Helen spent several years preparing for college before she entered Radcliffe College in 1900. In 1904, she graduated from Radcliffe cum laude.
Helen Keller was the first deafblind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree.
While she was a student at Radcliffe, Helen wrote an autobiography, The Story of My Life (1902) with the help of John Albert Macy, her editor. She wrote fourteen books and many articles during her life.
Helen Keller was an activist and a feminist who campaigned for the right of women to vote. She was a lecturer and public speaker and traveled to more than 30 countries. Japan was one of her favorite countries.
On September 14, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honor.
Helen Keller died in 1968. She was 87. Shortly before her death, she told a friend, "Through these dark and silent years, God has been using my life for a purpose I do not know. But one day I shall understand and then I shall be satisfied."

Preparing your older child for the newborn baby
By Mrs Xenia Giannaki, Headmistress of Second Home Nursery School
The birth
of a newborn baby brings a lot of changes within a household, and it is very
common for the other siblings to feel jealous of the new addition to the family.
So what can you do as a parent to manage this situation?
1 Self-observation
As a
parent, the first thing you need to do is observe yourself. This way you can
easily realize any changes in your voice tone or attitude towards your older
child – after all, they are still children and do not transform to adults after
the birth your newborn child.
2 Making
them feel like a priority
When the
new baby arrives, it’s up to you to prepare the older child and make sure s/he
feels just as important and loved. Instead of a secondary position, try giving
them a leadership role and encouraging them to get involved.
3
Spending quality time
While your
new baby definitely needs extra attention, make sure you spend enough time with
the other child. In between caring for your newborn’s needs, invest in quality
time with your older one by reading to them, affectionately holding them and
make time to do things together.

Children and Moral Education: What we can learn from them
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Recently, the Ministry Of Education announced the importance of Moral Education as part of the curriculum. Based on that, I have been thinking about how there are so many things we can also learn as adults from our children related to morality.
Children teach us so much about moral education. For example, imagine if we all forgave like little children. If we could say, “I’m sorry” and then go right back to playing together like children do. No bitterness, no holding on, no fight to get right in our hearts to view someone the way we used to before they hurt us— all released.
Children mimic everything you do. It’s amazing how teachable they are and how quickly they absorb information and adapt. Imagine if we could learn like children, be as generous, vulnerable, wholehearted and loving like them. . . Just imagine!

"Eudaimonia" and the virtues we practice at Second Home Nursery School
Our beloved Parents and Friends,
The ancient Greeks called “eudaimonia” our “well being” and they believed that practicing a strong mind in a strong body leads to a happy life. Among what they define as the five crucial elements of well-being, each pursued for its own sake, are: positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishment.
At Second Home Nursery School, we have done our best throughout this year to accomplish all these virtues in order to feel sure that our graduate students will be well prepared like a good soil for the upcoming seeds that further education may place upon their current promising state.
I wish for each of them to have all the support they may need throughout their lives, and I wish that their love for advancement as they continue their education may be their strongest need.
Thank you all for being with us and I advise you to be always supportive no matter what the future may bring, as love is the most important thing you can offer your children.
I wish our little graduates all the success in their future endeavours as they progress to the next stage of their educational journey.
Thanking you once again and may love be always with you.

Kids Need Structure - A Message from Our Headmistress
Kids need structure. They need to know the proper boundaries and understand the consequences of their decisions. How will they learn these if we as parents and teachers don’t model it for them? Do you want them learning the facts of life on the internet? Probably not! Training begins at home and is reinforced at school. They need both.
If you have a child that was raised to understand basic moral values then you can have peace in knowing that they will come to their senses at some point.
Our children need limits. The way we raise them is the way they walk towards adulthood. So, giving kids everything they want is not loving them. It is just the opposite and will produce an entitlement mentality.
Things you can teach kids that will produce healthy adults:
- Love other people and be willing to help them.
- Be willing to work hard for what you want. Don’t expect a handout.
- Educate yourself continually. Never get to the point where you quit learning.
- Learn to forgive others who have wronged you. If you don’t… you give them power over you and you will be a prisoner of the past.
- Have an attitude of gratitude. Be grateful for what you have. Learn to say “Thank You.”
- Be willing to give credit to others. Nobody is solely responsible for their successes. Give credit where credit is due to others that have helped you succeed.
- Realize that the world does not revolve around you (or me). We are important pieces to the puzzle, but there are many other pieces which are vital to the big picture called life.
- Teach them to respect their elders and authority.
- Teach them to surround themselves with the right type of friends.
Help them find their passion in life. Begin to model the proper behavior for them, and don’t lose hope. Set appropriate boundaries, but continue to love them and let them KNOW you love them. When they get older they will remember your words and your actions.

"Your children will see what you're all about by what you live rather than what you say."
Dear Parents / Guardians,
As indicated by Dr Wayne W. Dyer in this famous quote, the example we set for our child is critical for their development because, each day, we are modeling behavioral expectations for our child.
The adage, "Do what I say, not as I do," simply doesn't work when it comes to effective parenting, no matter how often parents might wish it were true.
The example that we set plays a very strong role in determining our child's behavior—this is the reality of the situation and it is generally a good thing.
Children are always watching us. They always want to know how we are going to handle a situation. Whenever we model self-control with our voice or react to a stressful situation with grace, we are teaching our child how to navigate through life's more difficult pathways.
Sometimes parental behaviors can set the stage for emotionally disturbed behavior in a child. For example, a child who sees a parent use verbal or physical aggression to solve a problem is likely to repeat the behavior when playing with friends.
We are their role models for sure. So, let's be a positive one!

Pool Parties at Second Home Nursery School
With the weather getting warmer, we started having the pool parties every Tuesday at Second Home Nursery School for our little ones. They truly enjoy cooling off in the water, splashing around with bubbles, sprinklers and water toys as they play in the pool together. Playing in water is like playing in a brand new playground where even the simplest activities like clapping your hands or jumping are a whole new sensory experience, which can also help im-prove children’s balance and strength.

Happy Mother's Day - A message from our Headmistress
We are blessed to be surrounded by all the beautiful and powerful feelings that mothers instill to our existence. We are all products of mother’s love and dedication, and they have helped us become whatever we’ve wanted to be and reach wherever we have wanted to reach until now.
They’ve given us wings to fly, and let us fly far and go beyond the limits of their own world, so that we may conquer our own.
They’ve inspired us to find our way by encouraging and supporting our efforts with unconditional love.
They’ve felt that we deserve the best that life has to offer just because they always see us as special and unique.
They’ve motivated us to disclose our talents and pursue our goals further than we could imagine.
We feel privileged to have been raised by loving hearts and for being instructed by fruitful love, and this is the love we wish to share with our children at Second Home Nursery School.
I’d like to personally thank all the mothers for opening up their hearts to our school community because the love they offer has the power to improve a whole world by raising one generation.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Fire safety training and awareness at Second Home Nursery School
Safety first is safety always! On 29th February 2016, we had evacuation plan training for everyone at Second Home Nursery School courtesy of Al Rasheediah Safety & Security. Staff also attended a session about fire extinguisher types and usage in case of fire. It was an enlightening session and now all of us—kids and grownups—are fully prepared for any kind of emergency.
Welcome to a world of wonder at Second Home Nursery School
Our little toddlers at Second Home Nursery School explore and discover a magical world during school time.
Coming to school is like entering a fantasy land filled with a multitude of colours and a variety of creative activities that fuel the children’s imagination.
Most busy families nowadays need further support and service in addition to basic needs and care that they provide to their children—they want to ensure that a safe and happy learning environment is secured for them.
Great and nurturing teachers help create this world.
Let us have a glimpse of this amazing space for learning and you will note that in the eyes of these children which are full of joy and laughter is a change for us to build a brighter future.

Nursery school: Where life skills are built alongside ABCs and 123s
Besides academics, developing children’s social and emotional skills is a priority at Second Home Nursery School.
You’ve been with your baby from the moment they entered this world. You’ve been by their side constantly – holding them, comforting them, feeding them, and playing with them. So understandably, when you consider enrolling your child at a nursery school, a number of questions and doubts may arise in your mind. While anxiety and sadness are unavoidable feelings when it comes to being separated from them, starting nursery is the start of a new and exciting stage in your child’s life – one that will enrich their lives academically, emotionally and socially.
Not only does it lay the foundation of learning that will take place at kindergarten, but going to a nursery school gives young children an opportunity to play with other children, to learn how to share and to follow simple instructions, in groups as well as individually with a staff member. Being in this nurturing and enabling environment will also help your child develop confidence and boost their social skills.
Second Home Nursery School is dedicated to providing a supportive environment for children to experience different methods of learning.
So don’t worry about having to choose between protecting your child’s play time and focusing on academic skills to prepare them for kindergarten – a high quality early childhood education (such as the EYFS programme) will ensure that your child is offered the best of both, because staff are trained to understand the unique ways that young children learn and develop. Time, space and activities are organized in such a way that they are suited to children’s cognitive, social, physical and emotional capabilities, thereby putting your child on the path to success.

What do Daycare Channel, Safety First Medical Services, Slices UAE and Second Home Nursery School have in common?
We all got together to host the first Coffee Morning for parents at
Second Home Nursery School!
Second Home Nursery School hosted its first
coffee morning for parents of our children here at the school premises on
Thursday, 4th February 2016. In addition to some opening words from
the Headmistress and teachers, a number of presentations were scheduled during
the event from experts at the Daycare Channel, Safety First Medical Services,
and Slices – the catering company.
The event began with an introductory message
from Headmistress Xenia Giannaki outlining the nursery’s agenda for the new
term. She also presented a short video showcasing a typical day’s activities at
Second Home Nursery School from the time the children walk in through the gate
until the pick-up time.
The first presentation for the day was about
the Daycare Channel application being introduced at Second Home Nursery School.
With this app, a live communication channel is established between parents and
staff, providing customised access control system, generated reports from the portal,
as well as planning and organization of daily, weekly and term activities.
Next, an expert from the Safety First Medical
Services Centre spoke to parents about the importance of First Aid, and provided
them with more information about the upcoming workshop being conducted at
Second Home Nursery School in First Aid Training. This is a course designed for
anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card
in Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED to meet job, regulatory or other requirements.
One of the highlights of our coffee morning
event was the insightful presentation by Slices about the need for children to
eat healthy. Slices is the homegrown food and beverage catering company based
in Abu Dhabi with a mission to transform eating habits across the UAE through
providing wholesome, nutritious meals for students, and they will soon be
serving meals right here at Second Home Nursery. Executive Chef Matt
Thompson opened the presentation with a few words about the standards of
cookery, presentation and recipes used by Slices, followed School Food Program
Director, Louise Du Plessis, who shared some expert advice on nutrition for
young children.
Finally, Headmistress Xenia Giannaki concluded
the event, and there was a food tasting session courtesy of Slices with an
assortment of samples that were pleasing to the eye as well as to the taste
buds. Everyone enjoyed the delectable items on display, and it also provided a
wonderful opportunity for parents to mingle with the teachers and have
one-on-one time with them.
We extend our sincere gratitude to our parents,
guest speakers, staff and well-wishers for their support and cooperation which made
this event a successful and memorable one for us all.

Stay healthy and bright, maintain a balanced diet
Health is wealth, and regular exercise and a balanced diet are the keys to healthy living. We’re sure your little ones have no trouble getting regular exercise – they’re so energetic and lively. But the most important aspect of healthy living is maintaining a balanced diet. When it comes to getting children to eat healthy, we know that buying and preparing healthy meals is not the difficult part – it’s finding a way to make them actually eat those nutritious foods that’s challenging! To make this easier and to ensure that your child is getting enough nutrients, they need to take in a balanced amount of protein, fruits, vegetables, grains and dairy. Also, added sugars need to be avoided, along with saturated and trans fats.
Some strategies to encourage healthy eating habits and improve nutrition include: serving a variety of healthy foods and snacks, having regular meals as a family, getting kids involved in the process, ad being a role model by eating healthy yourself.
Bear in mind that bargaining or bribing kids so they eat healthy foods in front of you is not going to work in the long run. A better strategy is to give kids some control, but to also limit the kind of foods available at home.
(Note: If you have questions about nutrition for young children or specific concerns about your child's diet, please talk to your child's doctor or a registered dietitian.)
